The Tower and the Garden
Volti + Left Coast Chamber Ensemble Premieres
TWO PREMIERES FOR VOICES AND INSTRUMENTS
November 18, 2018 – Hillside Club, Berkeley, Sunday 7:30 PM
November 19, 2018 – SF Conservatory of Music, Monday 7:30 PM
GREGORY SPEARS is writing a major, 30-minute piece for voices and string quartet, called “The Tower and the Garden” – a setting of three poems juxtaposing the dangers of unchecked technological advancement (the tower) and the need for a place of refuge (the garden) in a world threatened by war and ecological disaster. Spears’s work has been called “astonishingly beautiful” (New York Times), “coolly entrancing” (The New Yorker), and “some of the most beautifully unsettling music to appear in recent memory” (The Boston Globe).
LAURIE SAN MARTIN, a current Guggenheim fellow and a professor of composition at UC Davis, has written a piece for voices, two oboes and cello – imagine that sound! – setting a mysterious story, “Witches,” by Lucy Corin. “Three girls, maybe eight each, lean over a pothole of water, stirring with sticks. It’s hard to tell, because they’re frozen, although it’s summer…”
Completing the program are two works for the instrumentalists of Left Coast Chamber Ensemble:
- Benjamin Britten Phantasy Quartet, op. 2
- Addie Camsuzou New Work for Oboes and Strings WORLD PREMIERE*
*Addie Camsuzou’s new work is made possible by generous support from the Kurt Rohde Emerging Composer Fund
