Songs of Lowly Life: No. 4. Lullaby by Stacy Garrop

“Songs of Lowly Life” (2011) was the result of Volti’s third commission to Stacy Garrop. Stacy chose to set five poems by Paul Laurence Dunbar, the first African-American poet to gain national and international renown. “Lullaby” is the fourth song in the set, which can be heard on Volti’s album “This is what happened.” The baritone soloist is Jeff Bennett.

 Lullaby

Sing me, sweet, a soothing psalm,
Holy, tender, low, and calm,
Full of drowsy words and dreamy,
Sleep half seen where the sides are seamy;
Lay my head upon your breast;
Sing me to rest.
